A Local’s Vacation - Part 5

By James | October 28, 2007

Mahogany Run Golf CourseWell, today is my last day on the island and we are going sailing. I love sailing! I used to go sailing a lot when I was younger and really miss it. On the way over we passed a beautiful golf course nestled in a valley on the North side of the island. Mahogany Run Golf Course offers 18 championship holes, including the famous Devil’s Triangle. Mahogany Run Golf Course is operated by the Ginn Company and is a perfect activity during a St. Thomas vacation or a St. John vacation. Mahogany Run is the premier Caribbean golf destination and is open to the public and accommodates all hotel guests and cruise ship schedules.

A Local’s Vacation - Part 4

By James | October 27, 2007

PostcardWoke up Saturday and the sky was beautiful as it was every day. Willie tells me it’s not normally this nice in October and I’ve been lucky to have had good weather everyday. Our plans for the day are to drive around the west end of the island to the various beaches on the north and south sides and catch some sights for good photographs. After a delicious breakfast prepared by my good friend Willie, we packed up in the truck and headed out.

A Local’s Vacation - Part 3

By James | October 26, 2007

Friday we took it easy and hung out around the house so I didn’t take any pictures. It was my birthday and I didn’t really want to go out in sun after getting toasted yesterday. Being the computer geek I am, I helped Willie reinstall windows on his laptop. I figure it’s fair exchange for allowing me to stay at his place. That night we went out to dinner for my birthday at A Room With A View in Bluebeard’s Castle.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas at night.Normally one would want to come here at sunset or before to get a daytime view of the harbor and surrounding area. The name of the restaurant really does say it all. We chose to visit later in the evening when less people were around and I could snap some photos without bothering customers.

A Local’s Vacation - Part 2

By James | October 25, 2007

My first full day on St. Thomas started after sunrise, which was much earlier than where I had come from the day before. I could get used to the lesser change in length of day, they don’t even bother with Daylight Savings Time down here. Some morning coffee hits the spot as the day before I had not drank coffee to avoid bathroom trips on the plane and ended up with a headache from skipping it. We had learned the night before that we had secured a captain and boat for a few hours of fishing and swimming but we had to go early since the captain had plans for the afternoon. We gathered what we needed for our boat trip, packed up in the truck and headed out to meet Captain Jimmy Hendricks on the Octavie.

A Local’s Vacation - Part 1

By James | October 24, 2007

I’ve always had a fascination with the island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands because one of the earliest photo memories I have is from a vacation my parents went on when I was 3 years old. I can clearly picture the small wave of crystal clear water with a tiny fish swimming in the back of the wave with the blue sky behind it.. just as the wave clobbered me.

When I met Willie and we created this website, he invited me to come visit and stay at his place. I realized my 43rd birthday was approaching and thought it would make a great chance to get material for the website and enjoy a little relaxation at the same time. The plan was to visit and see the things that Willie liked about the island, a side of the island from someone living there. At the same time it would provide great insight, tips and other things that the standard tourist fare doesn’t see.

Since my birthday is in the middle of October, it’s just at the end of the hurricane season so I was able to get a great deal from American Airlines, $300 round trip. I got the tickets 3 months ahead of time and traveled Wednesday to Monday out of Dulles International(IAD) airport. Traveling mid-week and reserving at least 3 months ahead will ensure best price, I also lucked out as the dates were still considered off-season.
