A Local’s Vacation - Part 5

By James | October 28, 2007

Mahogany Run Golf CourseWell, today is my last day on the island and we are going sailing. I love sailing! I used to go sailing a lot when I was younger and really miss it. On the way over we passed a beautiful golf course nestled in a valley on the North side of the island. Mahogany Run Golf Course offers 18 championship holes, including the famous Devil’s Triangle. Mahogany Run Golf Course is operated by the Ginn Company and is a perfect activity during a St. Thomas vacation or a St. John vacation. Mahogany Run is the premier Caribbean golf destination and is open to the public and accommodates all hotel guests and cruise ship schedules.

Muller Bay, Saint Thomas US VIWe arrived at Vessup Beach on Muller Bay that was next to the ferry over to St. John. The next time I visit Saint Thomas, I will definitely get over to Saint John, but I just didn’t have the time on this trip. There are a few independently run ferry companies running between St. Thomas and St. Jonh. Passenger and Vehicle ferries run everyday on a tight schedule. Saint John ferry It is recommend that you arrive at least 25 minutes prior to departure. The passenger boats take about 15 minutes to cross and the car barge takes about 45-60 minutes. Passenger ferries are about $5 per person, with the usual discounts for age. There is an extra charge for baggage. Pay on the dock in the new terminal. Find a seat inside or outside that you will like for the whole ride, because there is No Standing or moving around while the ferry is moving, even if it rains. Also remember to plan for rush hour traffic, these passenger ferries are for tourists and commuter’s, and often get very full at these times. Baggage gets left on the dock to be loaded, and you get pushed along like your on a ride at a amusement park. The car barges charge about $50 per vehicle, depending on size and number of passengers , is collected on the ride over. Mostly all open deck ferries, some with snack bars and you are free to walk around , or stay in your vehicle.

Small SailboatThere was a beach party going on at the place just down the beach because there was some good reggae music floating across the water. One of the great things about sailing is you don’t need a large boat that makes a lot of noise and drinks expensive fuel. The wind is free and abundant in this part of the world. I am surprised the only wind power generating I saw was on the boats moored in the bay.

Getting the Boat ReadyCapt. Willie keeps his boat right next to the Latitude 18 Bar and Restaurant which looked like a great place to eat. Just before we were about to head out, a squall came across Pilsbury Sound and created this magnificent rainbow. I tend to see good omens in things like rainbows and like to think this one was trying to tell me I need to stay in Saint Thomas.

Rainbow Over ParadiseI’ve come to the conclusion that I want to come back to live here one day, it truly is a paradise. The people are not all hurried and pressured leading to a much more enjoyable experience in the worst of conditions. I’m going to find a piece of land and build a small little place that I can live in and work my online businesses. Anyway, it was a hard day of sailing and we crawled back home. One more night of drinking rum punch and I’m headed back home.

The next morning when we woke up, the power was out and couldn’t shower or eat. The flight home is going to suck and I know it already. At the airport, I manage to spill half my french fries on the floor cause there’s no where to sit. Yay. Oh, great! I get to sit in a row with two other overweight people. The guy on the end is great, but the woman in the middle doesn’t seem to have learned about overhead storage and is constantly picking up her large bag from the floor and opening it. Nice lady, but man, what a pain! I don’t wanna go home!!!!

I shall return Saint Thomas, I shall return. I may have to return a few times, but eventually I am getting a one way ticket down!

Cheers!
